Hey ya'll,
First of all let me say this, I went out about 2 days ago to muck out his stall and found worms in his manure. They were about 2 1/2 to 3 inches long or so, and about 1/2cm around, with a small peach colored ball on I think the tail, and the rest of the body was an off white color.
I've looked in my books I have, and on the internet and can't seem to find what kind they are exactly. The only reason why I hadn't wormed him regularly yet is 'cause when the lady gave him to my sisters and I she wasn't sure when he had been wormed last. She thought it might have been sometime in the summer, so she suggested waitin til spring to worm him. I had been watchin for signs for quite some time now.
Okay, I wormed him on Tuesday with IverCare (ivermectin) Paste 1.87% that treats up to 1500 lbs and is put out by Farnam. This is what the lady told me to give him(the one who gave him to me).
Now I go out today to muck out his stall and there's little grub lookin things in his manure. They're a redish pink color, and are about 1 1/2cm long and 1/2cm around. I haven't seen anymore of the off white lookin things, which he passed before I gave him the deworming paste.
If soemone could possibly give me an idea of what these two types of worms are, or if they're just different stages of the same kind, I'd appreciate it a lot!
Oh and by the way, before I wormed him his stomach looked quite round. And now it looks more normal. Again it's only been a couple of days since I gave him the dewormer. Is this possible or is it just me?
Once agian thanks so much ya'll!!!

I agree with Paul. And if he has only been wormed once since last summer, you better worm him again in at least a couple of weeks. It aint gonna hurt him.

There are several good sites on the internet which can help you identify the worms and provide detailed information.
Doing a quick search, the site below provides pictures, information about the worm etc.

Okay thanks ya'll.
Well, with this dewormer, since I gave him enough for 1000 lbs I'm suppose to give him the rest next Tuesday. After I do that would you still recomend that I buy more and do the same thing again?

With ivermectin products after you worm him the second time he should be good for two months. I like to rotate between that and Quest gel, the ivermectin can be kind of harsh on their system. There are studies coming out that says some species of worms are becoming resistant to ivermectin products.

I agree that the horse should be given a second dose of dewormer about 10-14 days after the first dose. He should be good after that.
If the horse is on dry feed now, there is no need to deworm again until the horse goes to pasture and is on grass. The worm larvae are passed through the manure and then seek grass to survive. Horses pick up the larvae when they have to graze next to fresh manure piles. If horses have enough room to move in a pasture and the psture isn't over grazed, there will be minimal worms. Horses by nature drift in pastures and don't graze the same spots for a few days unless they have to. This is nature's way to prevent worm problems. Horses that are on dry feed don't graze next to manure piles. I worm our horses before they go to the pastures and then worm them in the fall when they come in from the pastures after we get frost in the fall. If they pass worms in the freezing temps, the worms will die. If they are passed before freezing temps, they can be reinjested by other horses.

Well, the pasture is big wnough that he shouldn't have to eat any grass right by and pile of manure. But durring the spring and summer I'll probably go out there and clean up a few piles just to make sure.
Also, he hasn't been doing it as much, but he has eaten his own manure. Which I'm assuming that could be why he go the worms.
I feed him from a hay net. And he hasn't been able to eat grass for about 4 months now
cause we've had snow and ice so much. He's just now startin to try and graze out in the pasture.
So if I worm him in about another 2 weeks or so, then I won't have to worm him til next year? Or is it towards the end of the year?
Thanks,

Hil---
Your horse needs to be on a regular schedule of worming. Why don't you talk to your vet about this???
worming once or twice a year won't do the trick...did you know that parasites are THE leading cause of colic in horses????
I can tell you what i do...i worm every six weeks with Ivermectin. A few times a year i double does strongid to get tape worms.
BUT, i live in new jersey and not where you are. Ask your vet for help, this is what they do for a living <g>
