I know i start alot of topics, oh well if it anoys anyone. But my question this time is what do you guys prefer Chinks or Chaps? and what type?
I have to spread my opinion, i guess im annoying like that. I prefer Montana style Batwings. not much else to say their is their. I dont like conchos and i dont like having any fancy buckles or carvings in my leather, and fringes annoy me alot. Although my next pair of chaps are going to be pretty much exactly like that 2003 or 2004 western horseman cover (the tim cox painting) with the two guys leaning over the fence shakin hands. I really liked those ones.

Bullhide shotguns in the cool seasons. I may buy some chinks for summer, but i don't own any now. I just ride boots outside my jeans. -Phillip

Guess I'd have to agree with Phillip. During the cold & windy winter days, my legs sure appreciate the shotguns. But I got one of those screwed up metabolisms where I can work up a sweat just standin in the shade if it's over 70 degrees, so I like my chinks. I'm too stubborn to give up my felt hat, even then, tho.

I thinks some of the pros to chinks are they can be cooler in hot weather, you have much better mobility when you are on foot. cons, no protection on bottom of legs unless they are very long chinks, they can get in the way if you wear them while westling calves at a branding, finge is always where is shouldn't on the calf. And my biggest problem with chinks is they can make to much noise when you are trying to sneak up on a new calf to eartag it.
Shotguns; pros warm on cool days, good leg protection, OK mobility. Cons OK mobility
Batwings; pros the best leg protection there is while horseback. Con; way to bulky (for me) while on foot
A little on fringe; the reason for fringe has nothing to do with style, well when it was invented anyways. It's purpose is to shed water which it does very well, you may have noticed that if you have a short pair of chinks on a rainy day.
I used to wear shotguns, but I have wore chinks for many years now. I am thinking of going back to shotguns as they may be the best alround chap for me.

I have a pair of shotguns that I've gotten too fat for but hold on to them just in case I loose weight.

Also have a pair of chinks that I wear most of the time. They have the strap and buckle closure which I like. Cary Schwarz made them for me about 8 or 9 years ago. As for winter it's Carhart insulated bibs. Paul

I wore chinks for years, but recently switched to shotguns & like them better. I had a real nice pair made by Wm Brown Holster in Tombstone AZ. My own design but based on 1880's style chaps. Zippered but look like step-ins. Old time laced front with brass buckle on the belt at the back. Brass conchos down the legs & long fringe. They put a nice cuff on them to match the belt. Good for lots of abuse; brandings, heavy brush, snow, you name it. They'll outlast me.
