Hey, I am new to this forum and fairly new to horses. We just bought a 3 yr. mare. I know what you are thinking a 3 yr old for someone who is fairly new to horses not a good idea. Well, I thought so until I got to know this horse a little. She is extremely quiet and easy to handle. My 12 yr old is riding her on trails etc. She is doing great. Anyway, we do have one problem. She is fine getting in and out of the trailer, but she kicks with her front feet on the trailer. It is not constant kicking but it is a enough that it is a problem. People have suggested we use hobbles or kicking chains. I am not real comfortable with either. Is there another way?

I realize no one has responded with ideas, and I am no expert. You mentioned that it was suggested to use hobbles, and you were not comfortable with this idea. I agree with you.

It isn't stated if these methods were to be used in a stationary trailer, or a moving trailer, however, MY common sense tells me to not use hobbles on a horse in a moving trailer. I know that may sound really obvious, but I feel better now. Thanks

TCP--

i think you need to identify more things...what kind of trailer, do you notice when she kicks, etc? lots of horses are "antsy" when the trailer is not in motion, but settle down once you are driving.

do you feed hay in the trailer? is she tied?

i agree with the comment of no chaines or hobbles....but i WOULD wrap your horse's legs for safety. what we do, is use bell boots on all four legs, then wrap with sheet cotton (like BB STAR) and polo wraps. offers support to the legs as well as protection.
