I'm new! I just got my third horse and its a three yr old palomino. she has simply been broke to ride and thats all. i want her to be my trail/ endurence horse but i also want to teach her some spins and things. since she only knows basic stuff (walk trot canter stop) and isn't neck reined i'm unsure of what i should teach her first. to neck rein? to turn with leg pressure? bombproofing? any advice would be appreciated Thanks

Several experienced people on this forum could fill many pages with info for you, however I think you would benefit from some of the training DVD's available by folks like Ray Hunt, Buck Brannaman, etc. Check back thru some of the older posts on this forum and you'll find lots of info on "good trainers/horsemen vs not-so-good ones". Pick a good one and stick with the program. Good luck.

ranchroper is right. You should find a good program, start at the beginning and stick with it. Remember, successful horse training requires a clear goal of where you want to go, a systematic approach to acheiving that goal and a commitment to see it through. While you are searching for that program or trainer, just ride. What ever your horse is capable of now, enjoy him at that point. So many people lose the opportunity to have fun and enjoy their horse today, because they are focused on what they would rather he be tomorrow. Miles and miles of riding breeds experience, maturity and self confidence in a young horse. sweaty saddle blankets are your friend
Anybody can start a horse, not that many can finish a horse. Most people can finish a horse if they set goals and ride the horse consistently and patiently for a few years.
There is also another series of videos from a guy that doesn't get much play. He has a sold program that works. He advertises in Western Horseman each month and has for years. His name is Wil Howe. He specializes in finishing horses. Checkout his ad for his website.

You can skip the Ray Hunt, he doesnt have any videos about finnishing a horse if I recall. Try Clinton Anderson he does that kind of thing. My own personal advice is if this is really just your third horse, i'd try finding a good place to sell and then buy something thats maybe 5 and had 3 years of riding on it. I wouldnt go with a horse that young just yet. But if your adament about this young of a horse as you probably are, right now if its only just been started to ride, you wont even be able to think about anything but riding in straight lines, turning left and right, stopping and backing up. Start with just the basics. Then come back when she gets that down good.
