Does anyone rember the formula? It was published in WH a few yrs ago, but I'm not about to go thru my old WH storage, with my luck I loaned that issue to a friend that never returned it. Apparently if you measured the cannon or some other bone of your young horse, then added some no. you would have your height of your horse at full grown. Anyhoo,,HELP!

The way I have done it is to take a string and hold one end at the center of the knee. Extend the string down to the hair line at the top of the hoof. Then measure the distance. Whatever the measurement is in inches, that will be the estimated mature height. 15"=15.0 hands, 15 1/4"=15.1 hands, 15 1/2"=15.2 hands etc.

This is based on the fact that the cannon bone of a horse never grows in lenght from birth to death. It will grow in diameter. This is only an estimate, there are other factors that influence growth.

Thanks NW, and thanks for the added fact on cannon bone growth, or lack of. No wonder when my filly was born "Boy she's all legs". Can't wait to go and measure, since dame and sire are both 14.2, reiners. Thanks again.
