From here, and some other boards, I believe that adding beet pulp to the regular feed might help prevent colic. I haven't read where it hurt a horse to feed it. It's mostly roughage with just a little food value. You can make it pretty soupy if ya like. I usually feed alfalfa/bermuda pellets. I measure out the BP 1/2 coffee can per feeding with my QH and a full coffee can for my Shire.I cover the BP with water and let it stand just about 3 minutes, letting it soak longer doesn't seem to matter in my case. I put the BP on top of the pellets and then let this set maybe 2 more mintues. I add my oil and feed. It's really a mushy looking feed but my ponies love it.
You can't let the BP soak over night unless you put it in a refrigerator.
IF this helps someone I'd sure like to hear back from ya. Saving one major Vet bill or even saving a horse would be great.
I just would like to see an end to colic.
