I just learned that my QH doesn’t care for pancakes. My Shire loves‘m. I guess this means that if I’m going to IHOP the QH can stay home.

That is pretty funny. What possessed you to give them pancakes? Did they have syrup on them?

On an elk hunt my husband was eating an orange and his 'guide' horse was all over him to eat the orange peel. Not so much the orange but just ate up the peel.

I once heard there was a taste test for horses and horses liked the flavor of bananas. I tried bananas on my guys and they basically turned up their muzzles.

So for now, I will stick with carrots and apples for treats.

Mine loves bananas, and a horse just down the way from us loves the banana peel. My horse also likes pizza without the toppings, hamburgers plain townhouse crackers, and he absolutely flipps over french frys, he knows what the fry container looks like and gets all excited and tries to grab them out of your hand.
peaeye
mine gets a "Little Debbie" oatmeal creme cookie at the start of every trail ride and one when we get back to camp.

At the race tracks I've worked on, peppermint stars, hard candy is a favorite. None of my horses will eat them, however.

I guess that horses are like us, we all have different tastes. When I was a boy, we had a welsh pony that would catch and eat chickens....

Mine loves peppermint candy and seven up. My friends paint loves orange juice donuts and ranch flavored doritos.

Kalo555, interesting about the 7up. I was told once (not sure how reputable) not to give equines highly carbonated beverages since they can't 'burp'. How much does the little one get?

In the summer, I will pour some beer in my palm and Rusty will lick it up. He LOVES beer!

Every fall I like to toss a bunc of pumpkins in the pasture where the horses are. It is pretty funny to watch them stomp them into little pieces so they can eat them.

I had a couple of pancakes left after breakfast. I always give my puppies leftovers. I thought I'd just offer the ponies one. Emmett loved what he got. My QH loves french fries and tortillas. If something is mostly grain or vegetable based I figure it's pretty safe. BTW, Emmett will force down an apple but only if it's all that's being offered.

CRH He was curious with the bottle of 7-up I had so I poured some into my palm and he loved it. That was it though...Im a little nervous giving him people food! Thanks for the info, never thought about the carbonation.

My first horse was named Dr Pepper, because he was a peppered rose gray and ironically he actually drank Dr. Pepper once!

Possibly one of the reasons he coliced

YOu guys make me feel ok for spoiling my horse. My QH is finicky and doesnt like a lot of crap. but loves bananas ( plus peals) and apples, and horse treats, the only problem is my lab is so jealous that i have to feed her everything i feed my horse. it is the dog who will eat anything the horse eats, but only in the presence of the horse, where the gains in sibling rivlary count!!!

what a funny thread! Macho does not get many treats...and even fewer by hand (had a bit of a nipping problem when we first got him...)

my old app, Corky LOVED pepperoni pizza washed down with Sam Adams. We had to try about 10 different beers to find one he liked. (years ago, somone wrote an article about giving the event horses a beer...we all had to go try it!)

Oh Bestey, I always knew I liked Macho! That is a horse after my heart. [Wink]
Now after re-reading this, I like Corkey too!

And BTW, I haven't tried pancakes with syrup and butter. If nothing else it'd be to sloppy to carry out there.

say, peaeye, the last part of your reply really caught my eye...I once lived in Arkansas, and always wondered what happened to my chickens...

When I was really little, my mom didn't have a car..so she'd toss me up in front of her and we went everywhere on her appy....even to the grocery store in town, lol.
Hep Cat (the appy) would flat refuse to go past a pop machine until she'd buy him a bottle of 7-Up! It was his only bad habbit, lol.
He lived to be almost 40 years old...so I guess it never hurt him...he'd grab that bottle and tip it up and guzzle the whole thing til it was gone....and you could NOT pry it away from him until it was gone, lol.

you'd have loved him. he was the perfect pony...buckskin with blanket appy, and kind to the bone. I bought him as a broken down barrel racer (truly...he fell at the lope), and we managed to make it to second level dressage. I miss him every day....

My dog likes to ride with me in the pickup. She also has an addiction to Hardee's hamburgers. She has also been known to growl at me if she is awake when we drive by a Hardee's sign without stopping.

My stud liked Salt&Vinegar chips, Pepsi and bread with mustard on it. Not so sure that stuff was good for him, but he could hear a chip bag open or a pop bottle open from a long way away and look out, cause he wanted his share

I met someone who got they're horse to do the tornado from zorro thing and drink a bottle of coke without help. It was weird.

I'd really like to hear the details of the chiken eating pony... one of my horses surprised me by hating apples and carrots. wierd, I thought all horses were supposed to like carrots at least.

Not a one of my mustangs will eat a carrot. Took 5 years for me to convince my gray that apples weren't such a bad thing......I still have to quarter and hold it for him to this day though, lol.

After he ate all of Hillbilly Gal's chickens, he started on turkeys.......

Honestly, he was a 6 year old Welsh stallion that we gelded and he would run down, catch and eat chickens. One old rooster evaded him consistantly and it got to be a contest between them. Why he would eat them, I don't know. I've read in some research about equines that would eat meat. I guess they acquire the taste.

I remember finally trading him for a couple of pigs.

Pigs eat chickens too.
