I see a alot of people using splint/sport boots on their horses. They use them for games, arena riding, trail riding etc and I'm trying to figure out why. When is it necessary to use them, should they be used as on certain horses for certain reasons, precautionary measures? Should they be used on older horses for support????? How do you decide you need them.

don't know about anyone else but i just use em when i'm roping and have a horse that really follows cattle, so there is less chance of causing damage if it steps on it's self

I have read studies that show they can do more damage than good at times. They have taken horses, put sensors and sports boots on them, and then put the horses on treadmills and gathered different types of data. Too many times in periods of hard riding, there can be an excess of heat build up underneath the boot that can be damaging to the legs. There is also evidence that they do not support the tendons like they claim to. Splint boots and bell boots are different. They will protect the feet and legs of horses that overreach or cross-fire. I would never consider using them on a horse that is being trail ridden or used in pastures. They collect too much debris and they absorb water like a sponge which adds weight and discomfort.

NW: agreed. I used the SMB boots for awhile while team roping, but I was never sure they did anything other than fill up with dirt. I don't use them now for anything. Maybe should try one on my tendonitis arm? smile.gif

Hi Kalo (yes, i found my way back!)

i don't use sports medicine boots....i've had a vet tell me about how much money she makes off people using them improperly...

but i do use splint boots and bell boots. the reason is that we do lateral work, and it just helps protect in case the horse clips himself. that's all.

hope all is well...

Thanks CRH. This must be where I was remembering reading about it all. I am actually looking for a friend...we are discussing the use of splint boots in my yahoogroup right now.

She is wanting some to protect her mustang when doing cavaletties(sp) and for on the trail to help protect against snakebites.
