My 4 yr old paint x draft cross gelding was diagnosed with Cauda Equina Neuritis, also called Polyneuritis Equi. I am wondering if anyone else has had experience with this. My gelding was urinating frequently so we ran a CBC and all his counts were good, no infection, we brought him in for more diagnostics and did an ultrasound. His bladder was the size of a watermellon. We were able to get him to void, and there were no stones or blockages. When they were doing the ultrasound they noticed that he has very little muscle tone to his tail. You can lift it strait over his back with little or no opposition. That was when they started talking about inflamed nerves and the Cauda equina syndrome. We are running some blood tests to rule out EMP and West nile (which he is inocculated against), and Herpesvirus type 1. They told us that it may not progress anymore that it is now, or it could move forward and start effecting his gaits and his bowels, it could lead to him being completely urine and bowel incompitent and eventually haveing to be put down. Has anyone had any experience with this and how to treat the symptoms. I am trying to get as proactive as possible. Thanks in advance.

UPDATE: I just got the results back from the neurologic panel I ran on him, and he was negative for Herpesvirus type 1, and West nile, he did however test possitive for the antibodies to the protozoa that causes Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis(EPM). We will be doing some further testing to confirm this diagnosis and then proceed with treatment.
