It's always struck me as kinda funny the way horses can wind up with 2 names.
Like the Registered name, Azule Prancing Prince Of Prussia or Cowboy's Heart Of Orange Gold
and then you ask what they call the horse and the name is like Butthead or George or Fred or Bugger.
Anyway it's funny.

It is pretty funny some of the names. I watch a lot of RFD horse shows and am getting to the point of being sick to death of hearing Lena and cat in the names. Seems like every QH in the country is related to a Lena or a Cat. Must be some serious inbreeding going on or something.
My Mustang is registered with USWHBA (US Wild Horse ans Burro Assoc.) As "Vinny the eraser" as he was captured outside of Vegas and when the newspapers and local TV come by to do stories on him, he hides from the camera. I figure he must be in the witness protection program, so we registered him with the nickname of a Vegas hitman hiding out from the mob
His around the house name is Vinny, but I end up calling him Numbnuts more often than not.

I love the name Vinny the Eraser, thats great! We had Jethro and Eli Mae. Our friends thought we were going on a prolonged camping trip when we moved to this isolated area. They kept comparing us to the Beverly Hillbillies, in reverse, we sold our comfortable 4 BR house to live in a 3 room hunting cabin without electricity, we did have a generator for 6 years, we are now on the grid.
After Eli's death we acquired Angel (Sinbas Black Impress) and Muley (Lollys Gold Hope). Angel gave us a new focus, she was severely injured when we got her and two vets wanted to put her down, but with faith and 4 months of wound treatments, she made a full recovery. Muley got her name because she would kick at anything that moved, including us. In two weeks and lots of carrots she was over that and is 100% trustworthy today.
The last two horses are foals we have raised. Mystical Dream is a combination of his parents names, but we call him Tidbits and have cursed him with this nickname as he is 20 months old and about 13.5 hands, wide as a barn, but no height and very slow with sexual development too. A Druids White MagiK (Magik) is more like a miracle; Muley's first foal, she let herself out of her stall after giving birth and ran down to the house and was nickering at the kitchen door at 7am. He was born in a thunderstorm, soaking wet, Muley wouldn't let him nurse, she was afraid of him. We got everyone to the barn, calmed down left them alone to get accustom to one another and everything was fine. We went to the house and cryed, the only color on him was a brown spot on the forehead and two small brown markings on the ears, we were sure he was lethal white. His magik must have worked, because mom is 16.3 and at 9 months he is 15.1.
There is alot in a name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well while we might use a registered name such as "Leotoes Last Titan" or "Tennessee on Ice" we always use some part of the registered name as there stable name. eg. Titan or Tennessee.....
If I was gonna call a horse Boofhead or numnuts or something I would register them as such.....

That was a nice story Graywolf. Horses sure do make life worth living don't they.
Vinny is my Mounted shooting horse, but we loan him out to our trainers 14 year old girl for Hunter/Jumper. He has won quite a few events and always place high.
I love him being there among all the high dollar horses with the unreal fancy names.
They anounce the rider, registered name, and owner before each ride and there is laughter when they say
Next up is Morgan Tyler, riding Vinny the Eraser, owned by Hans Shull of The Mustang Ranch.
Paul,
I kind of like that idea. Maybe I can register my next Mustang as "No One's shining Numbnuts" or something as I will have no idea who it's parents were.

I love picking out names usaully we take both parents and try to make a name with a little of both their names in it. It doesn"t always work. This year we aquired two mares that were due to foal the same time as our mares and I have a five year old son who thinks he"s twenty and knows all about nameing anything and everything. So we decided to let everybody name one. My daughter is into heavy metal and I had been trying for a leopard baby for the last twenty years and thinking this year would be like the last I told her if Mt mare had a leopard baby that I would let her name it aftr her fav. rock band. Well would you believe as faith would have it this was my year and so I've got a leopard stud colt named slipknot. My five year old named my ZanPar colt Diamonds Zander. The last one my wife and I got to name and I,I mean we named it after reading a Crazyhorse book Thunder Dreamer luckly he goes back to Dreamfinder.

All awesome names! I named my BLM mustang Metawa Wacipi Wi, which translates from Lakota to Moon Dancer Mine...I call him Metawa for short (Mine...but I think I am more his, lol.)
I sometimes call him my Little Big Man, Little Man, or Son...he comes to all of the above. (he's only 14 hands...but his heart is as big as Wyoming!)
My Appy mare was already named when I got her.. KP Emily, out of King Plaudit LC and Breezette.
Our Palomino mustang is Oliver Twist, my daughter's black mustang is Joker, and my mom's QH is Jet Black Baby...Jet for short.
Glad to see the forum finally coming back alive after a long sabaticle.

The second horse I had I named Missy and for me she was a great horse, but for some reason my dad and her didn't get along and because of that he referred to her as Misfit. Alot of names are strange or funny and it's interesting how these names come about.

We just adopted a new yearling mustang geldiong on Aug. 15. My daughter named him Spyders' Wild Legacy (Spyder, like the car, hoping he'll grow up to be fast and competitive, lol, and Wild Legacy because he is a mustang)
